Greetings delvers! With 2018 in full swing, next week we’ll be delivering you the final adventure of the Crown of Klade campaign arc. After surviving the perils of the Free City of Kasar in A Sworded Adventure and last week’s installment of Gamesmen of Kasar, our next adventure will see your characters leaving their homeland behind.
From there, we’ll bring you to another part of Trollworld—an area rich in T&T lore which veteran players of the tabletop game will instantly recognize. But you’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn exactly where you’re heading and how you’ll get there, no spoilers here!
In the meantime, we’re excited to introduce you to another member of the MetaArcade development team. Last month, we shared our Developer Spotlight on Sam Riordan, stalwart member of our content team who’s authored several of our T&T adventures including Labyrinth, Sword for Hire, and most recently, Gamesmen of Kasar. This week, we bring you Paul Movitz, another veteran of our mighty content team. Paul’s first published work with MetaArcade reaches all the way back to our launch at Gen Con 2017 with his remastery of Michael Stackpole’s Golden Dust, Red Death. Since then, Paul has been the creative force behind The Ascendant, our launch adventure for the Crown of Klade campaign arc. He’s also the developer at the helm of Blue Frog Tavern and Circle of Ice.
And while you’ll see Paul’s next adventure in a week, here’s your chance to get to know the developer behind the scenes. Enjoy!
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO? TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF!
Hi, my name is Paul Movitz, and I create content for MetaArcade, which means I write and remaster Tunnels & Trolls adventures. I have been an avid gamer ever since my family first purchased the Atari 2600, which was also the year that I started playing Dungeons & Dragons. Video games and role playing have been a passion of mine ever since.
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN GAMING? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AND HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS OVER THE YEARS?
When I was sixteen, my friends roped me into being Game Master for the summer. I ran campaigns for MechWarrior, GURPS Horror/Autoduel, and Teenagers from Outer Space and had the time of my life doing so. I love creating worlds and dropping my friends into them.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE GAME GENRE OR FRANCHISE? WHY DOES THIS TOP YOUR LIST?
GURPS from Steve Jackson Games is probably my favorite rule system because of its flexibility and character customization. As long as game has a game does a good job of creating a compelling and immersive world, I will probably like it.
IF YOU WERE STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND WITH A SINGLE GAME, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE? WHY?
Fallout New Vegas. I love the Fallout universe, and to me, New Vegas had the best balance in the franchise of story and game mechanics, especially with the wide variety of characters you could meet and factions to join or fight. Fallout 3 would come in a close second.
WHAT GOT YOU INTO TUNNELS & TROLLS? DID YOU PLAY ANY OTHER RPG’S OR TABLETOP GAMES?
Honestly I started playing T&T after learning about it through MetaArcade. I am disappointed that I never ran across it as a kid, because I would have loved it!
In my time, I have played a lot of tabletop RPGs: Dungeons & Dragons, Star Frontiers, Paranoia, The Star Trek RPG, Star Wars, Gamma World, Traveler, Psi-World, Top Secret, GURPS, Battle Tech, Car Wars, and many, many others.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY, AND WHAT LED YOU TO JOIN METAARCADE?
I started off as a Customer Support/Community intern with Motiga Studios working on Gigantic for Xbox One and Windows 10, where I met some of the people who would become MetaArcade team members in the future. That’s how I got my foot in the door in the games business and feel very fortunate to be working in a field so close to my personal passions.
Years later, David (MetaArcade’s Founder & CEO) needed some short stories to go along with a bunch of images for a marketing pitch. I guess he liked what I had written!
EXPLAIN A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PROCESS. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION WHEN BUILDING AN ADVENTURE OR CREATING A STORY?
Sometimes, I dig deep into the blackness of my soul, and out of that endless screaming well of stygian darkness, I find the terrified muse of my creativity.
But most of the time I just see a situation in life and think, “what if?” My brain never really shuts off and I like to let my imagination run wild from there.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF CREATING A “GOOD” ADVENTURE? WHAT DO YOU FOCUS ON THE MOST?
I want things to be fun for the player. I want them to feel immersed in the world. I also think that each adventure should have something new to offer—something that sets it apart from the others. That’s part of what has always intrigued me about Tunnels & Trolls. So many of the classic adventures pioneered new ideas in adventure gaming, and the solo modules never lack for surprises.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TUNNELS & TROLLS ADVENTURE THUS FAR? WHAT MAKES IT YOUR FAVORITE?
Naked Doom. It is the first Tunnels & Trolls adventure that I played so it holds a special place in my heart. Plus, I was also the first one to best the Balrog in my gaming group, so I’ve got some bragging rights I can enjoy there.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST WHEN PLAYERS BEGIN CREATING AND SHARING THEIR OWN ADVENTURES?
Not to sound overly romantic about it, but I think that art is one of the highest forms of human expression. And the sharing of art and ideas is one of the greatest things we do as a species.
I am looking forward to people having a new medium to do that, and seeing what our players create.
IF YOU HAD ONE LESSON TO BESTOW UNTO PLAYERS LOOKING FORWARD TO CREATING THEIR OWN ADVENTURES, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM?
Experiment! Find the creative process that works for you. But be organized in your process and finish what you start. Too many great ideas never get past the idea stage!
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF GAMING? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR FREE TIME?
I don’t get to do it as much as I would like, but I really enjoy scuba diving. I started when I was thirteen, and I still find breathing underwater to be amazing.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: WHAT SUPERPOWER WOULD YOU HAVE AND WHY?
Oh I’d definitely choose to be the god of my own pocket universe. Think of the amazing adventures you could create!
